Are You Serious?

Did you guys see this story about how more women are donating eggs because the economy is bad?

http://www.fox5vegas.com/news/17045493/detail.html

It's the end of the article that kills me:

He said it is a fairly simple process that takes about three weeks. “It's more invasive than donating sperm, but still, it's painless, and there's more time involved, but we try to make it as smooth a process as possible,” Shapiro said. He said the side effects of donation usually include some aches and cramps, similar to those of a woman's period.

WTF?!?! Obviously spoken from a moron who never actually donated eggs. Stupid jackass.

Hey, whatever gets them in the door!

Just kidding. It's this kind of thing that makes egg donation (and the outrageous compensations) seem shady.

Obviously a man...don't think there are too many woman out there who even think period cramps are 'painless'. And while I have not had an egg retrieval and tops during my IUI's I only had 4 follicles...but damn, even carrying those around hurt more than a period! Stupid people..

Thanks for your comment on my blog and your positive vibes!!!

I saw that article linked to from Drudge Report this morning, I was shocked as well that an article that made national news wasn't more accurate and thorough. "Some aches and cramps." What if the donor gets OHSS?! She could be risking her life. What about the bloating that could last up to a month afterwards? What about the anesthesia -- why not mention that ER is an actual surgery. Why would the doc downplay it? Perhaps he wants to encourage more women to be donors.

Nice how a male doctor will put his spin on egg retrieval as "painless."

Egg donation is a blessing (I'm embarking on this right now) and I am so grateful for the woman who will one-day go that extra mile for me.

But to claim there's no pain involved, huh? Listen, very little in the world of infertility treatments is painless.
